From its geological origins to the vibrant life thriving within, this guide provides you with the essential insights to make your visit to Crater Pululahua an unforgettable adventure.

What Makes Crater Pululahua Exceptional?

The Pululahua mountain complex is located 20 km north of the capital of Ecuador, Quito with its highest point located 3356 m asl (meters above sea level) at the summit known as Sincholagua. However, it is not the summit itself that is the reason for its uniqueness, but the gigantic crater that lies in the middle of the complex.

How Was Crater Pululahua Formed?

Such a unique natural formation was the result of at least 6 major volcanic eruptions in the Holocene period, which changed the fate of the many cultures that settled around and near the mountain, such as the Cotocollaos, Yumbos, Chorera and Valdivia. It is believed that members of these tribes survived and were able to carry on their cultural heritage. We invite you to come with us and learn the incredible stories the locals have to tell.

What history lies behind this natural wonder?

Several routes between the mountains were used by the pre-Incaic Yumbos culture, also known as Caras, as trade routes between the highlands and the coast. • The interaction between nature and the various human communities that have inhabited the Puluahua is unique in its kind. At present there are still several settlements such as Niebli, Los Reales and Pululahua that in colonial times were handed over to the Dominican order, however they never lost their community and secrets.

    • There is no better way, or perhaps the only way to get to know the unique and unrepeatable folklore of these communities than interacting directly with the locals, direct descendants for generations of the settlements that have been here for centuries.

    • We especially invite you to experience the culture of the community, their traditions, their food, their stories, their experiences and their sacred connection to every mountain and formation that surrounds this crater.
